Head of the Federal Departement of Defence, Civil Protection and Sports
Chess is sports. Only those who are physically and physiologically well prepared and fit will be in a position to endure a championship. They are in a position to handle victory as well as defeat. I very cordially welcome the participants of the tournament in Switzerland. The country may be down a bit three weeks after the European Football Tournament. Nonetheless, St. Gallen offers a worthy surround-ing for your tournament. You have all travelled from 20 different countries to compete in chess with people like yourself. Despite being physically handicapped you are not deferred from enjoying playing the royal game of chess. You have all my respect and sympathy for this achievement. On 1 August, the second last day of the competition, Switzerland will celebrate its 717th anniversary. Be welcome as our guests on this special day for Switzerland. I am happy and pleased to have taken over the co-advowson. I wish you and your care team an exciting championship and an unforgettable stay in Switzerland.
